The Foundation

So this isn't the entrance sign to The Foundation, but I thought it was a more intriguing picture-- at least intriguing enough for me to forget taking a photo of the front;; so shoot me. It had been a long day, and I was hungry-- We were heading off to the nightmarket later that night, and I needed a little somethingsomething to hold me over before devouring redbean sweet treats.

It didn't take long to be seated (But it -did- take a while to actually be acknowledged of existence. I guess it comes with the atmosphere they want to give off.). We were taken further into the restaurant, where it was sweltering, so I was very glad when they plopped down the large jar of water. I've heard a few comments where people find this crude, but I'm thinking they just need to be kicked off their high horses, because I think it works.

Busy, with a nonchalant attitude, it seems like if you want service, you go and -get- yourself some service. We had to flag down our waitress, but she was nice enough.

The first dish we ordered was the Sesame Society. Carrots, tofu, cauliflower, broccoli, chickpeas, zucchini, raw and cooked spinach, sesame seeds (of course), all on top of a bed of quinoa. Vegetables were fresh, but the accompanying sauce was very strong. Slightly peanut-y, with a very strong dash of salt. The first few bites were pretty good, but the overwhelming sauce eventually took its toll. If I was to have veggies swimming in sauce, I'd have them swimming in the sauce from The Naam.

The other dish we shared was the Persistent Pnut Burger -- quinoa, chickpeas, roast onions, spicy peanut patty, served with a mixed greens salad topped with a mango sauce, sesame seeds, and pumpkin seeds, and a raw red cabbage salad. The burger as a whole was alright, some would consider it far too dry, but I didn't mind (call it.. the feeling of 'health'. I like that;). There wasn't much spiciness to it like the menu had described, and it's definitely not a good ol' fashioned grease slathered beef burger, but yea. I'd have it again.
The mango sauce was also sweet, tangy, and I made me like the dish a bit more.
However, the raw red cabbage side was just. Not good. Raw red cabbage.. Just think about that;; Maybe it's an acquired taste, who knows, but the sourness just wasn't for me.

I felt that The Foundation was unapologetic and aggressive, complete with a raised eyebrow and a smirk. And you know what, I kind of liked that about them. If I want vegetarian food again, I think I prefer what Naam has to offer (then again, I only tried a couple of dishes on both sides), but if you think you can put up being here enough to like it, you might just feel right at home here.
