My favourite nostalgic highschool hang-out spot, Lazy Den Tea House. We used to come here very often. After movies, after summer fireworks, after school... Great times. Great times. And since my friend was heading back to Japan soon, we decided to grab a drink and a chat here.
Their menu is pretty simple, and I believe this is the only place I have a set item that I'm dead set on ordering every time. "House Special Sandwich" and a "taro slush bubble tea with pearls".
It's a pretty laid back atmosphere. The decor is simple, but it's cute none the less. They also have a machine that holds a host of cheesy games that my friends and I used to play very often (highscore on photohunt. chyea.)
The lady at the front is always kind enough to bring over the food and drinks to where you are sitting, instead of you having to go grab it at the counter like other bubble tea places. The sandwich and drink together cost $6~.
Granted, I should probably mention that we have gotten to know each other by face over the years. But from the get go she would always do this. She brings the food and drinks to all the customers, and I have seen her go out of her way to get to know customers as well.
The drink is solid as well. Mind you, I don't go to many bubble tea places (gasp!. I know. really?), so I am unable to compare it to more popular bubble tea joints. However, I definitely prefer the bubble tea here than say.. Pearl Fever or what have you. Then again, if the pearls aren't frozen, and the drink doesn't taste either like pure sugar or syrup, Ill drink it. But again, not drink of choice.
My only complaint is there is only one size. It's the standard size for bubble tea, but it's also their only size. If there were smaller sizes I would come here more often for a snack.
This is their house special sandwich. My absolute favourite. Lettuce, pork floss, a special type of mayo, ham, nicely done egg, and to give it a little something else, pepper. It's really the pepper that makes this sandwich special. Again, I'm not sure how these compare with other taiwanese sandwiches, but this one is pretty darn good. My last two visits -have- been a slight let down, as they were not as crispy or grilled as I was used to in the past, but the mix of ingredients they have going on is awesome.
It's too bad they're also rather greasy..
I also may have a bias due to my association with this sandwich and awesome late night eats and conversations.
My friend had the corn and ham cheese sandwich. In short, not as good. There wasn't a whole lot of filling, as you can see. Furthermore, the edges are bread, and not much else, forcing you to eat through quite a bit of dry bread to get to the filling. However, there was a good amount of corn, so if you're in to that interesting combination, it's alright to try.
Very kind to customers, a great sandwich, and solid bubble tea. A little out of the way, but it's a nice place to visit none the less. My friend and I ended up talking for over two hours about a whole array of subjects. It was good, very good.
Also, I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but I wasn't taking pictures with my usual camera that day. I had lost my camera actually, and only found it after I had gotten back from this;; haha.
